Chapter Fifteen

Days go by, and I’m nowhere near seeing Tueur again.

The pixies keep me busy from morning until evening inside the mirror room, but it’s obvious that there is some serious magic at play here.

I’m learning things faster than ever before—defense movements and techniques, attack tricks and, most importantly, using different weapons for different combat scenarios.

It’s one grueling training session after the other, yet I can’t stop myself from coming into this place every time. As soon as my eyes peel open at sunrise, I’m hyped up and eager to try something else.

So far, Kirin has been a faithful and kind companion. She “transfers” my food and drinks from the downstairs kitchens, which I’ve not seen yet—but they make delicious meals and strong teas, which has made me quite happy. I’ve never eaten this well before, and it shows. Granted, I was a frickin’ ghost when I first arrived here, having spent weeks in the cave prison. I’m feeling much better and hell of a lot stronger, with a bit more meat on the bones. There are significant improvements in my stamina, as well.

Days go by, yes, but I am evolving. With Kirin taking care of most of my basic needs, I’m left with Melisse between one and two hours every evening.

My guardian angel brings me books to read—books from different worlds, she says, penned by humans and other magnificent creatures alike.

There is poetry from realms I’ve never even heard of which Melisse translates into the common tongue for me.

There are entire volumes of encyclopedias describing realms I might someday visit, she says.

There is literature aplenty, stories short and long alike, tales of heroes and their brave quests across dangerous lands to rescue their beloved princesses.

There are horror stories, too, of monsters most frightening and cruel… and there are histories of my people, too, with more accurate detail than anything mentioned in our compendiums from the Endless Woods.

I spend a significant amount of time reading by the candlelight, and I can’t skip on this stuff, either.

Melisse talks about it the next day, making sure I got through every page. But much like with my physical training, I’m getting crazy fast at flipping through the pages. I read an entire novel within an hour, and by the time I’m done, I find myself dazed, confused, and utterly exhilarated by how much I’ve managed to absorb… almost effortlessly.

“The magic in this place is doing something to my brain, isn’t it?” I ask Kirin as she escorts me back into the mirror room one morning.

I wear the special dress she made when I first awakened in this place, but the ensemble shifts into my training suit. Slick black leather that’s like my second skin, metallic protection plates in all the right places, and my favorite boots so far.

She nods once, pointing to her own head before she opens the doors. Inside, only Rinni, the yellow pixie, awaits, which is a strange sight.

“Where are the others?” I ask.

My combat suit comes on while the doors close behind me.
